ANGADIPURAM, MALAPPURAM, KERALA

Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Templeतिरुमांधामकुन्नु भगवती मंदिर

Thirumandhamkunnu occupies a hill at Angadipuram. Although famous for Bhagavathy worship, the sacred complex also gives Shiva a foundational place and includes Ganapathy worship associated with Mangalya Puja.

About this temple

Thirumandhamkunnu occupies a hill at Angadipuram. Although famous for Bhagavathy worship, the sacred complex also gives Shiva a foundational place and includes Ganapathy worship associated with Mangalya Puja.

History

The shrine was the tutelary goddess temple of the Valluvanad rulers at Angadipuram. Its royal and Mamankam associations belong to regional historical memory; Mandhata’s foundation story is sacred narrative rather than a dated medieval royal record.

Legends & Religious Traditions

King Mandhata receives from Shiva a linga formerly worshipped by Parvati. Resting on this hill, he finds it fixed to the ground. Parvati sends Bhadrakali to recover it. Mandhata’s ascetics defend themselves with tree nuts that become weapons. When Kali assumes a vast form and tries to seize the linga, Mandhata embraces it; the linga splits and the divine presences manifest. Parvati agrees to remain, with Kali and the infant Ganapathy. These episodes explain the linked shrines and the remembered nut-throwing ritual.

Architecture / Physical Features

Kerala-style temple roofs and the elevated precinct frame the Bhadrakali and Shiva shrines. The goddess’s imposing multi-armed form belongs to the temple’s specific iconographic tradition.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

Mangalya Puja is an offering associated with marriage prayers. Its promised benefits are devotional beliefs, not a guarantee of a personal outcome. Attanga Yeru recalls the battle in the foundation legend.

Festivals and Religious Significance

The annual Pooram is a multi-day celebration of this hill shrine. Confirm its particular year’s dates before travelling.

How to Reach

Angadipuram lies near Perinthalmanna and has a railway station. Continue locally to the hill precinct; the final approach includes changes in level.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

Accounts emphasise either Bhagavathy or Shiva as the principal deity. This reflects the intertwined foundation story and worship hierarchy, not two interchangeable temple locations.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties

No archaeological date is inferred from Mandhata’s epic genealogy. Current puja booking conditions should be obtained from the temple.
