VENKATESWARA KONDA, PORT AREA, VISAKHAPATNAM, VISAKHAPATNAM, ANDHRA PRADESH

Sri Venkateswara Swamy Konda Templeश्री वेंकटेश्वर स्वामी कोंडा मंदिर

The Venkateswara temple occupies one of the harbour’s three neighbouring sacred hills. Its gateway and elevated position overlook the port channel. The nearby Christian Ross Hill shrine and the Dargakonda Muslim shrine are distinct places, not additional sanctums of this temple.

About this temple

The Venkateswara temple occupies one of the harbour’s three neighbouring sacred hills. Its gateway and elevated position overlook the port channel. The nearby Christian Ross Hill shrine and the Dargakonda Muslim shrine are distinct places, not additional sanctums of this temple.

History

The district attributes the temple to Captain Blackmoor in 1886. An environmental heritage publication also gives 1886 and associates the information with inscriptions. National tourism instead gives 1866. Without directly examining a dated inscription, 1886 is retained as the better-supported administrative and heritage account, with the alternative made explicit.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Captain Blackmoor’s remembered patronage
The shrine’s locally recorded story centres on a European patron’s construction of a Venkateswara temple above the harbour. The consulted official accounts do not establish a particular dream, illness or sea-rescue miracle that prompted him. Such motives are therefore not invented.

The three sacred hills
Local interpretation presents the neighbouring temple, church and dargah as a shared landscape of different faiths. This is a relationship between nearby places, not a claim that their deities or foundation traditions are identical.

Architecture / Physical Features

A compact sculptured gateway marks the approach. The elevated temple setting provides views towards the channel and harbour; it should not be described as the much larger Simhachalam hill complex.

How to Reach

Approach through Visakhapatnam’s Port Area and confirm the current route to Venkateswara Konda. Ross Hill is a useful landmark but the church and temple approaches are not interchangeable.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The district and environmental heritage account give 1886; national tourism gives 1866 and also uses the name Narasimha Swamy Konda. The record retains the verified Venkateswara identity and states the dating disagreement rather than choosing an invented reconciliation.
