About this temple

Durgiana Temple is a Hindu pilgrimage complex in Amritsar. The principal shrine rises from a sarovar and houses Lakshmi-Narayan, with Ram Darbar and Radha-Krishna shrines inside.

History

The present complex was rebuilt in 1921 under Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor. Amritsar’s district administration records that Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya laid its foundation stone. The rebuilding date should not be treated as proof that worship began only in the twentieth century.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The temple committee preserves a religious tradition that Rama visited this sacred area during the Ashvamedha episode. It connects the surrounding region with Sita, Luv and Kush at Valmiki’s Ram Tirtha ashram. This is sacred geography and devotional tradition, not evidence dating the present building to the Ramayana period.

Architecture / Physical Features

A central dome and canopies rise above the water tank. The arrangement reflects architectural parallels with Amritsar’s Golden Temple while serving a distinct Hindu place of worship. Silver doors are a notable feature of the main entrance.

How to Reach

The district portal places the temple about 700 metres from Amritsar railway station, 1.5 km from the bus stand and 11 km from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport. These are approximate locality distances.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The committee’s history mentions rebuilding in 1921 and a foundation ceremony by Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1924. These describe different stages, but the page does not fully explain their sequence. Its generic darshan timetable starts at 5:15 AM while its winter Mangla aarti begins at 5:30 AM; visitors should confirm winter opening before an early visit.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties
