About this temple
Shree Shiva Kshethram, also listed as Shiv Mandir, is a Hindu shrine on Kavaratti island. Reporting on its Vinayaka image makes this small community temple a documented example of interfaith cooperation.
History
In an April 2024 ANI report carried by Northeast Live, an administration official and the temple’s volunteer priest described its establishment in 1978 by the Madhya Pradesh special force, followed by care under the Indian Reserve Battalion. This is attributed community testimony rather than an archaeological foundation record.
Legends & Religious Traditions
The temple’s distinctive supported story is contemporary: Muslim ex-serviceman and artist Cheriyakoya carved the Ganesha image for devotees. His interview describes learning carving by watching his father and responding to requests from soldiers. This community history is not an ancient Puranic origin legend.
Establishment / Consecration and Dating
1978, according to the official and priest interviewed in the 2024 ANI report.
Religious and Cultural Significance
PTI reporting in February 2024 also highlighted the Vinayaka image made by a Muslim former serviceman as a symbol of religious harmony.
How to Reach
Kavaratti is reached through approved Lakshadweep transport arrangements. The administration describes Kochi connections, the Agatti airstrip and onward island transfers. Check current sailing or transfer availability before booking.
Entry, Tickets and Booking
Plan travel through the Lakshadweep administration’s entry-permit process. Island entry permission and access to the temple are separate arrangements; no verified temple ticket tariff was found.
Seasonal Access and Visitor Safety
Sea conditions affect inter-island transfers. Arrange authorised travel and confirm the onward connection to Kavaratti before setting out.
Contradictory Accounts and Variations
Some copied travel descriptions confuse the reference to a force battalion with an enormous construction cost. No such cost is asserted here. A “24 hours” directory label is not treated as a confirmed ritual schedule.
Verification Notes and Uncertainties
Exact opening hours, current priest contact and current access arrangements need local confirmation. The image is an AI-generated devotional illustration of Shiva and Ganesha, not a photograph of this temple or its actual deities.
