NARVE, BICHOLIM, NORTH GOA, GOA

Saptakoteshwar Temple, Narveसप्तकोटेश्वर मंदिर, नार्वे

The Narve temple preserves the worship of a deity associated with Goa’s Kadamba kings. Its present mainland setting must be distinguished from the older sacred site on Divar.

About this temple

The Narve temple preserves the worship of a deity associated with Goa’s Kadamba kings. Its present mainland setting must be distinguished from the older sacred site on Divar.

History

Kadamba coins name Saptakoteshwar. After the removal of the linga during Portuguese rule, it was sheltered and re-established. Shivaji ordered the Narve temple rebuilt in 1668; the entrance inscription records that patronage. A further conservation campaign was inaugurated in 2023.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Seven sages are said to have prayed where five sacred rivers met the sea. After seven crore years, Shiva appeared and agreed to remain. The name joins sapta, seven, with koti, crore. The immense duration is sacred time rather than a historical construction date.

Architecture / Physical Features

The temple precinct combines a regional roofed sanctuary and lamp tower. The credited photograph predates the recent conservation work and should be read as a historic view.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Gokulashtami is particularly important here as the remembered manifestation day of Saptakoteshwar, despite the date’s more familiar Krishna association elsewhere.

How to Reach

Travel by road to Narve in Bicholim taluka. Do not navigate to the ruins of the earlier Divar temple when seeking worship at the current shrine.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

Divar’s original site and Narve’s relocated temple are two related locations. The seven-sage narrative, Kadamba patronage and seventeenth-century rebuilding are separate layers.
