About this temple
Rudranath is the remote rock shrine of Shiva in Chamoli district, reached through forest and alpine grazing grounds from the Gopeshwar–Sagar area. It belongs to Panch Kedar and honours Shiva’s face. Its long approach makes it a distinct trekking pilgrimage rather than a roadside stop.
History
The district identifies Rudranath as an established Panch Kedar shrine but does not give an inscription-based foundation year. Its Pandava association belongs to sacred tradition and should not be converted into a verified building date.
Legends & Religious Traditions
The Panch Kedar narrative says Shiva avoided the Pandavas after the war and manifested in separate places. His face appeared at Rudranath. This shares a cycle of stories with the hump at Kedarnath, arms at Tungnath, middle at Madhyamaheshwar and hair at Kalpeshwar.
Sacred Geography and Natural Setting
The route crosses places named Lyuti Bugyal, Panar Bugyal and Pitradhar in the district trekking account. The district also identifies kunds along the pilgrimage landscape.
How to Reach
Road travel reaches the Gopeshwar–Sagar area. The district temple page describes approximately twenty kilometres on foot from Sagar; its adventure page describes a twenty-two-kilometre journey often spread over two days.
Nearby Religious Places
Gopeshwar provides the regional temple-town base. Anasuya Devi is associated with a different approach through Mandal; it is not automatically a short addition to the Sagar trail.
Accessibility and Senior Visitor Guidance
This is a long, sustained mountain trek. Road access to Sagar should not be confused with vehicle access to Rudranath; the district characterises the pilgrimage as one of the more demanding Panch Kedar approaches.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations
Official route lengths differ between twenty and twenty-two kilometres. The district describes elevations around 2,290 metres, while other guides publish higher figures; no precise survey measurement is established here. Route choice, intermediate stays and current local trail information matter more than treating a single online number as exact.
