About this temple
Renuka Ji’s temple stands beside the sacred lake near Dadahu in Sirmaur. The lake, its parikrama path and the annual meeting of Renuka and Parashurama form a connected pilgrimage landscape.
History
The shrine is part of the long-standing regional worship of Renuka and her son Parashurama. The official visitor accounts consulted do not give an inscription-based first construction year for the present temple.
Legends & Religious Traditions
Renuka is revered as the wife of Jamadagni and mother of Parashurama, Vishnu’s warrior-sage incarnation. Local belief links the lake and surrounding hills to their presence and meditation. The annual fair enacts the son’s visit to his mother through the arrival of Parashurama’s palanquin from Jamu Koti.
Sacred Geography and Natural Setting
The freshwater lake is surrounded by forested hills and protected wildlife habitat. Its setting is part of the pilgrimage, not a reason to disturb the water or animals.
Rituals, Worship and Seva
Pilgrims honour Renuka at the lakeside and follow the sacred circuit around the water. Festival palanquins and ritual bathing belong to specific local observances.
Festivals and Religious Significance
At the Renuka fair, Parashurama is carried from Jamu Koti and ceremonially visits the lake before returning. Confirm the annual calendar; the general tradition is not a fixed future programme.
How to Reach
The district guide places Renuka Lake about 37 km from Nahan and 60 km from Paonta Sahib. Travel by road towards Dadahu and the lake precinct.
Nearby Religious Places
Parashurama Tal and the related shrine are part of the local sacred setting. Jamu Koti is the separate home of the festival palanquin.
Contradictory Accounts and Variations
Renuka temples exist in several states. The Sirmaur lake shrine should not be conflated with Mahur in Maharashtra or assigned its Shakti Peetha narrative without evidence.
Verification Notes and Uncertainties
