MORGAON, PUNE, MAHARASHTRA

Moreshwarमोरेश्वर

About this temple

Mayureshwar at Morgaon, beside the Karha in Pune district, is traditionally both the first and returning final stop of the Ashtavinayak yatra. Its fortified precinct, unusual Nandi figure and peacock-riding form of Ganesha distinguish it from the other seven shrines.

History

The Chinchwad Devasthan Trust describes the shrine’s association with Moraya Gosavi and later restoration of subsidiary images in 1967. The primordial installation stories are matters of faith and do not establish a construction date for the present fortified complex.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The Trust recounts Ganesha riding a peacock to defeat Sindhu and Kamalasura. It also preserves a separate Kalpavinayak story involving a bull mount. These describe different manifestations within the local sacred tradition rather than one uniform narrative.

Architecture / Physical Features

The Trust describes an elevated, fortified temple with four corner pillars resembling minarets, a Nagarkhana before the steps, a mouse figure and a large Nandi facing the shrine.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Ganesh Chaturthi and Maghi Ganesh Jayanti are important. The Trust documents Dvarayatra observances in Bhadrapada, Magha and Jyeshtha, distinct from an ordinary one-temple darshan.

How to Reach

Morgaon is approached by road from Pune; Jejuri is a nearby rail and pilgrimage connection. The state page and leaflet give differing Pune distances, so use the actual starting point when planning.

Nearby Religious Places

Jejuri’s Khandoba Temple is a separate regional pilgrimage. Completing the traditional Ashtavinayak sequence includes returning to Morgaon after Ranjangaon.

Address and Location Details

Shri Mayureshwar Temple, Morgaon, Baramati taluka, Pune district, Maharashtra 412304.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The Trust distinguishes the visible image from a hidden primordial image in sacred narrative and says the present appearance differs from descriptions in the Mudgala Purana. These are beliefs about forms of the deity, not verified material analyses. Its peacock and bull stories refer to different manifestations, so neither is silently discarded.
