DALIGANJ / HASANGANJ, NEAR THE GOMTI, LUCKNOW, UTTAR PRADESH

Mankameshwar Mahadev Mandir, Lucknowमनकामेश्वर महादेव मंदिर, लखनऊ

Mankameshwar Math Mandir is the Gomti-side Shiva institution in Lucknow’s Daliganj–Hasanganj area. Its identity combines worship of a large shivalinga, a guru-disciple monastic lineage and the tradition that Lakshmana found inner peace here after leaving Sita at Valmiki’s ashram.

About this temple

Mankameshwar Math Mandir is the Gomti-side Shiva institution in Lucknow’s Daliganj–Hasanganj area. Its identity combines worship of a large shivalinga, a guru-disciple monastic lineage and the tradition that Lakshmana found inner peace here after leaving Sita at Valmiki’s ashram.

History

The math’s own narrative credits an early royal patron, Raja Har Nav Dhanu, with a temple crowned by 23 golden finials. It describes later destruction, renewal by Naga ascetics of the Juna Akhara, and construction associated with Seth Puran Chand. It states that the name Mankameshwar Math Mandir came into use around 1933. These are the institution’s transmitted historical claims; independent dated evidence for every earlier phase was not located.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Returning towards Ayodhya after leaving Sita, Lakshmana is believed to have rested beside the Gomti and worshipped Shiva at dawn. The prayer brought him peace after the distressing journey. This is a regional Ramayana-linked tradition, not proof that the present masonry dates to that era. Another monastic account remembers a devotee who served the shrine amid overgrowth, became the renunciant Ram Giri and was later known as Fakkad Kaka.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

Shiva worship and abhisheka form the core of the visit. The math states that Monday aarti is traditionally performed by its serving mahant. Gomti aarti is another institutional activity, with a larger observance on Purnima; confirm its venue and time separately from sanctum darshan.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Mondays, the month of Shravan and Mahashivratri are the principal high-demand occasions for this Shiva shrine. Allow extra time for abhisheka queues and follow the offering arrangements in operation on the day.

How to Reach

Ask for the Daliganj/Hasanganj Mankameshwar Math near the Gomti. Lucknow has several similarly named Shiva shrines; do not substitute an address in another neighbourhood solely because a photograph is labelled Mankameshwar.

Suggested Visit Duration

Allow 45–75 minutes for darshan and the math precinct, excluding Monday or Shravan queues. This is a planning estimate.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The site’s Ramayana association, royal foundation account, later rebuilding and 1933 naming refer to different stages. The claim of destruction by twelfth-century Yemeni invaders appears in transmitted accounts but was not independently established here. Opening hours also differ between the older directory and the math website.
