About this temple

Madhyamaheshwar is the Shiva temple in a high valley of Rudraprayag district, approached on foot through the Ransi–Gaundar pilgrimage corridor. It is one of the Panch Kedar and is associated with Shiva’s middle or navel. Budha Madhyamaheshwar is a separate higher shrine beyond the main temple.

History

The shrine is linked with the Pandavas in religious tradition. The official material reviewed describes its worship and mountain setting rather than a securely dated foundation inscription. Its place in the Panch Kedar sequence varies between published lists.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The Pandavas sought Shiva after the Mahabharata war. The deity disappeared in animal form and his middle or navel manifested here. References to belly, torso and navel are related variations in the traditional identification.

Architecture / Physical Features

BKTC notes subsidiary shrines of Parvati and Ardhanarishvara. These are additional objects of worship around the main Shiva temple, not substitutes for its Panch Kedar identity.

Sacred Geography and Natural Setting

The setting faces the Chaukhamba, Kedarnath and Neelkanth mountain groups. The higher Budha Madhyamaheshwar shrine is described as a cluster of rocks roughly two kilometres away.

How to Reach

Reach the Ukhimath–Uniana–Ransi area by road and continue on the pilgrimage trail through Gaundar. Official pages give different total walking lengths, so the current road head and chosen stages must be identified before calculating a day’s walk.

Pilgrim Facilities and Accommodation

The district mentions a small dharamshala and supply arrangements through Gaundar. State tourism identifies Ransi as a base and Bantoli as a route halt; these are mountain services whose capacity differs from a large pilgrimage town.

Address and Location Details

Madhyamaheshwar Temple, above the Ransi–Gaundar valley, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, India.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The state destination page gives a twenty-four-kilometre trek, while its circuit summary gives nineteen kilometres from Uniana. The district calls this the second Kedar, whereas BKTC describes it as the fourth visit in a circuit sequence. These are inconsistent route/order descriptions, not evidence of different temples. Bull and buffalo versions also coexist in the wider story.
