About this temple

Chamba’s principal temple complex contains six stone shrines aligned north–south above the old town. The northern Lakshmi Narayan shrine gives the group its name; three principal shrines honour Vishnu and three honour Shiva.

History

The main shrine is attributed to Sahil Varman in the tenth century. Later rulers enlarged and embellished the precinct. Balabhadra Varman added the Garuda pillar, Chhatra Singh added gilded pinnacles in 1678, and Rani Sarda’s Radha Krishna shrine dates to 1825. These additions make the complex a layered royal institution.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The white-marble Vishnu image is traditionally associated with stone brought from the distant Vindhya region. The account of Chhatra Singh gilding the towers in defiance of a demolition order is part of the recorded local royal history; it should not be expanded into an undocumented battle or miracle narrative.

Architecture / Physical Features

Curving shikhara towers rise above sanctums and short vestibules. Wooden chhatris and wheel-like roof coverings adapt stone temple architecture to snowfall. The arrangement combines monumental towers with small courtyard shrines.

Sculpture, Inscriptions and Artistic Heritage

Carved sandstone surfaces and the marble images deserve attention. Garuda, Vishnu’s mount, stands on a high pillar at the entrance.

How to Reach

Approach through Chamba town to the temple group north of the old palace. The final visit is on foot within the historic precinct.

Nearby Religious Places

The separate Sui Mata shrine and Bhuri Singh Museum provide context for Chamba’s sacred landscape and royal patronage.

Conservation and Heritage Status

The group is a nationally protected monument maintained under Archaeological Survey of India supervision.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The tenth-century attribution concerns the principal early shrine, not every building: the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century additions have their own histories.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties

No single foundation year, current ritual price or guaranteed step-free route has been inferred for the entire complex.
