PALAKOLLU TOWN, WEST GODAVARI, ANDHRA PRADESH

Ksheerarama Ramalingeswara Temple, Palakolluक्षीराराम रामलिंगेश्वर मंदिर, पालकोल्लु

Ksheerarama is Palakollu’s Pancharama Shiva shrine, identified with a pale linga and the sacred imagery of milk. It is a separate pilgrimage from nearby Somarama at Bhimavaram.

About this temple

Ksheerarama is Palakollu’s Pancharama Shiva shrine, identified with a pale linga and the sacred imagery of milk. It is a separate pilgrimage from nearby Somarama at Bhimavaram.

History

The historical festival survey records medieval endowments, including an inscription of 1157, and later work on the temple tower. Such evidence separates the surviving institution’s development from its mythic origin.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Upamanyu, the son of Kaushika, asks Shiva for milk to sustain his worship. Shiva causes the sacred milk supply to appear, explaining names such as Ksheerarama and Palakolanu. The wider Pancharama narrative links the linga with the fragments of the demon’s protective linga; another local belief credits Vishnu with its installation.

Architecture / Physical Features

The linga can be viewed through openings on four sides of the sanctum according to the district account. The precinct contains numerous associated deity shrines, rather than only the central Shiva image.

How to Reach

Palakollu has road and railway connections. Continue to the Ksheerarama precinct in the town centre.

Nearby Religious Places

Somarama at Gunupudi, Bhimavaram, is about 20 km away in the district guide and is another of the five Pancharamas.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The milk story, Vishnu’s installation and the Pancharama fragment cycle are related devotional explanations, not interchangeable historical construction reports. Different retellings assign the fragmentation to different divine actors.
