About this temple

Karnaprayag is the confluence of the Pindar and Alaknanda in Chamoli district. It occupies an important road junction in the Alaknanda valley and is one of the Panch Prayag. The sangam, Karna shrine and Uma Devi temple belong to the town’s religious landscape but are not the same physical feature.

History

The district’s geographical record establishes the Alaknanda–Pindar meeting, and a state-hosted tourism master plan recognises the town as a sacred confluence with an important shrine. The antiquity claimed for associated traditions does not supply a verified foundation year for every temple building.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Travel accounts associate the name with Karna of the Mahabharata, who is believed to have worshipped the Sun here. Uma Devi is revered separately as a form of the Goddess. These stories express the town’s sacred associations and should not be used as archaeological dates.

Sacred Geography and Natural Setting

The Pindar joins the Alaknanda here; the river continues downstream as Alaknanda. This differs from Vishnuprayag, where the tributary is Dhauliganga, and Rudraprayag, where it is Mandakini.

How to Reach

Karnaprayag is reached along the Alaknanda road corridor and connects with the road towards Adi Badri and the Kumaon region. Combine a confluence stop with the separate Adi Badri visit only after allowing for that road journey.

Nearby Religious Places

Uma Devi and the Karna shrine are associated with Karnaprayag town. Adi Badri is a separate group of stone temples reached by road from Karnaprayag, approximately 19 kilometres in the district’s account.

Seasonal Access and Visitor Safety

The district warns of erosion and powerful flow in its steep river channels. A photograph taken during low winter water is not a guide to safe access during monsoon or floods.

Address and Location Details

Karnaprayag Sangam, Karnaprayag, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

Some travel descriptions confuse the confluence with the Dhauliganga. Chamoli district’s river-system account identifies Pindar, which is followed here. Spellings Karnaprayag, Karnprayag and Karanprayag refer to the same town; they do not identify three separate circuit stops.
