About this temple
Kanaka Durga’s temple crowns Indrakeeladri above the Krishna river at Vijayawada. The goddess is worshipped with the associated Malleswara shrine in a living hill pilgrimage.
History
The current temple institution preserves several religious narratives of the hill. They do not by themselves establish a construction year for the present gateways and visitor infrastructure.
Legends & Religious Traditions
The yaksha Keela asks Durga to remain within him. She turns him into a mountain and promises to dwell there after defeating Mahishasura. Indra and the gods come to worship, explaining Indrakeeladri’s name. A separate Mahabharata association places Arjuna’s penance and Shiva’s gift of the Pashupatastra at the hill.
Sacred Geography and Natural Setting
The Krishna river and Indrakeeladri are essential to the pilgrimage landscape. River access and temple access are separately controlled.
Festivals and Religious Significance
Dasara Navaratri is the principal major gathering, with the goddess adorned in different named forms. Use the temple’s dated programme for each day’s alankaram and reporting time.
How to Reach
Vijayawada Junction, Pandit Nehru bus station and the Gannavaram airport area provide onward connections. Continue locally to the authorised hill approach.
Entry, Tickets and Booking
Use the Durga Malleswara Devasthanam’s official arrangements for darshan and sevas. Festival queues and hill traffic restrictions can differ substantially from ordinary days.
Contradictory Accounts and Variations
Keela’s transformation and Arjuna’s penance are distinct sacred traditions. The modern district is NTR, while older travel sources place Vijayawada in the undivided Krishna district.
