About this temple

Grishneshwar, also written Ghrishneshwar or Ghushmeshwar, is the Shiva Jyotirlinga at Verul near the Ellora caves in Maharashtra. Its present form owes much to Ahilyabai Holkar’s eighteenth-century restoration. The carved stone complex has a tiered spire, a pillared hall and a Nandi facing the sanctum. The Ghushma narrative explains the shrine’s devotional name and is presented separately from its documented rebuilding history.

History

Grishneshwar at Verul is an older sacred site with several later rebuilding phases. Maharashtra Tourism associates a reconstruction with Maloji Bhosale in the sixteenth century and the present temple’s major restoration with Queen Ahilyabai Holkar in the eighteenth century. Its carved stone walls, five-tiered spire and pillared hall belong to this developed architectural complex. The nearby Ellora cave sanctuaries are a separate monument group with their own chronology.

Legends & Religious Traditions

In the Ghushma tradition, the devotee makes and worships Shiva lingas and immerses them in a nearby lake. Even after her son is killed through her sister Sudeha’s jealousy, she continues her worship. Shiva restores the son and offers to punish Sudeha; Ghushma asks for forgiveness instead. Shiva remains as Ghushmeshwar, commemorating her devotion and compassion.

Founder, Patronage and Reconstruction

Maharashtra Tourism records rebuilding associated with Maloji Bhosale and later restoration under Ahilyabai Holkar. These are later building phases at an older sacred site.

Architecture / Physical Features

A five-tiered spire rises above a carved stone complex. The hall has sculpted pillars and a Nandi before the east-facing sanctum.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

Panchamrut worship, Rudra Abhishek and Mahamrityunjaya recitation are among the observances described by Maharashtra Tourism.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Maha Shivaratri brings night worship and special pujas. The shrine is traditionally counted as the twelfth Jyotirlinga.

Best Time to Visit

October–March is the cooler visiting season. The temple is a year-round pilgrimage site.

How to Reach

Travel by road from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar toward Verul/Ellora. The regional airport and railway station provide onward road access.

Nearby Religious Places

Ellora’s Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cave sanctuaries are close to Verul; they are a separate heritage complex, not part of the Grishneshwar temple building.

Dress Code and Temple Etiquette

Male devotees entering the inner sanctum are required to remove their shirts. This sanctum practice is distinct from a claim that every visitor must remain bare-chested throughout the entire premises.
