About this temple

The Centre for Buddhist Culture, commonly called Gompa Temple, occupies a small hill above Itanagar’s Nehru Museum. Its gate, rising approach and white stupa distinguish it from the surrounding streets. The site is a living Buddhist space as well as a viewpoint over the capital.

History

The Papum Pare administration identifies the monastery as Thupten Gatseling and attributes its consecration to the Dalai Lama. A Rajiv Gandhi University field-visit report states that the fourteenth Dalai Lama laid the foundation stone in 1983. Laying a foundation and consecrating a completed monastery are different events; an exact consecration date is not inferred from that report.

Legends & Religious Traditions

A modern monastery’s remembered beginning
The supported local account concerns the Dalai Lama’s association with establishing and consecrating the centre. It does not provide an ancient temple-discovery miracle. This institutional history is retained in its own right.

Buddhist images and narrative art
The Buddha image and paintings of Buddhist narratives belong to the monastery’s teaching and devotional setting. They should not be described as evidence that the Buddha physically visited this hill. No such local visit tradition was verified in the consulted sources.

Religious and Cultural Significance

The centre supports Buddhist devotion and study in Itanagar. The word gompa refers to a monastery; the tourism label temple does not make it a Hindu shrine.

Architecture / Physical Features

A coloured entrance gate and winding approach lead to the hilltop gompa. A white stupa with gold-coloured ornament stands outside; the principal building has a distinctive yellow roof.

How to Reach

Reach the hill near Jawaharlal Nehru Museum from Itanagar. Naharlagun railway station provides a regional rail approach followed by road travel. The hill’s rising approach matters for visitors who find steps or slopes difficult.

Photography and Electronic Devices

Ask the resident monks before taking interior photographs. One visitor’s permission in the district narrative does not establish unrestricted photography for everyone. The photograph attached here shows the monastery grounds.
