VIZIANAGARAM, VIZIANAGARAM, ANDHRA PRADESH

Sri Pydithalli Ammavari Templeश्री पैडितल्ली अम्मवारी मंदिर

Pydithalli’s worship joins Vizianagaram’s royal memory, the Pedda Cheruvu landscape and the annual Sirimanu procession. The railway-station-side Vanam Gudi and the city festival route are distinct parts of this sacred geography.

About this temple

Pydithalli’s worship joins Vizianagaram’s royal memory, the Pedda Cheruvu landscape and the annual Sirimanu procession. The railway-station-side Vanam Gudi and the city festival route are distinct parts of this sacred geography.

History

The district places the temple’s development in the eighteenth century and connects its received account with the January 1757 Bobbili conflict. Its festival essay nevertheless admits that Pydimamba’s biography lacks definitive proof. Royal association, oral tradition and a modern festival description should therefore be kept distinct.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Pydimamba and the Bobbili tragedy
The district retells how Pydimamba, understood as Vijaya Rama Raju’s sister, tried to prevent war. News of his death reached her as she sought to intervene; she collapsed and announced that she would unite with the goddess. This is a local sacred biography, not a fully authenticated eyewitness record.

The dream and the lake
In the discovery version, she appeared to Patiwada Appala Naidu in a dream, directing him to recover her image from the western side of Pedda Cheruvu and establish worship. Another version has her give the instruction before death.

The chosen Sirimanu tree
Festival tradition says the goddess reveals the year’s tree to the priest in a dream. The prepared timber becomes the elevated ceremonial seat on a chariot, carried between temple and fort.

The Paladhara promise
A further story connects the fishing-net umbrella with the community that retrieved the image from the lake, preserving its promised place in the procession.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Sirimanu Utsav is held on the Tuesday following Vijayadashami. The ceremonial white elephant recalls royal participation; the Anjali chariot and Paladhara umbrella have their own customary roles. Festival dates follow the religious calendar rather than an unchanging September or October date.

How to Reach

Vizianagaram Junction provides the rail approach; Visakhapatnam is the regional airport gateway. Identify the Vanam Gudi near the station separately from the city temple and fort procession area.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The district festival essay contains an opening 1737 reference but later places the Bobbili battle in January 1757. Its own admission of incomplete biographical evidence is retained. The pre-death instruction and later dream are versions, not one seamless documented event.
