About this temple
Mopidevi’s distinctive worship joins Subrahmanya with a linga-form image and serpent-related penance traditions. The shrine is in Krishna district on the regional route between Vijayawada and Machilipatnam. Its attached image is an AI-generated devotional illustration of the serpent-and-linga theme, not the actual installed image or temple interior.
History
The district identifies the shrine within the Challapalli Estate temple administration. The available sacred narratives explain the place of worship but do not establish a dated construction sequence. No unsupported ancient founding year or single royal builder is assigned.
Legends & Religious Traditions
The child, the sages and serpent penance
The Devasthanam account tells of Subrahmanya laughing at the contrast between unclothed childlike sages and richly dressed divine visitors at Kailash. Parvati rebuked him. To atone, he undertook penance in serpent form at the place later revered as Mopidevi. The narrative explains the shrine’s serpent associations; it is religious tradition rather than dated history.
Agastya’s recognition
A further devotional account associates Agastya’s southern journey with recognising the place of Subrahmanya’s penance. It belongs to the kshetra’s sacred geography, not an excavated founding record.
The potter’s dream and clay offerings
A widely circulated version names the potter Veeravarapu Parvathalu: Subrahmanya appeared in his dream and directed him to an anthill containing the sacred image. Clay offerings are associated with that devotee. The consulted retellings do not establish an exact historical date.
A different discovery version
National tourism instead names a woman, Veeravaru Parvatha Lakshmi, receiving a vision. This cannot simply be merged with the potter account. The difference is retained for readers.
Rituals, Worship and Seva
The temple describes Rahu–Ketu worship, tonsure, ear-piercing vows, cloth cradles for prayers for children, and rice-and-jaggery pongal offerings. District material also lists Sarpa Dosha rituals and annaprasana. These are religious observances, not medical guarantees or proof of a particular cause of illness.
Festivals and Religious Significance
Subrahmanya Shashti and Nagula Chavithi are highlighted in tourism material. Confirm the current temple festival programme rather than assuming that every general Skanda observance has the same local arrangement.
How to Reach
Mopidevi is reached by road through the Krishna delta. Sources give roughly 70–80 km from Vijayawada and about 30 km from Machilipatnam; these vary with the route and starting point. Neither city’s railway station is the temple entrance.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations
The discovery devotee is identified differently as a male potter, Veeravarapu Parvathalu, and as a woman, Veeravaru Parvatha Lakshmi. Neither version is silently corrected into the other. Healing and progeny expectations are recorded as faith traditions.
