About this temple

Kashi Vishwanath is the Shiva Jyotirlinga in Varanasi, on the western side of the Ganga. The deity’s names Vishvanatha and Vishveshvara mean Lord of the Universe. The present temple is associated with Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar’s eighteenth-century rebuilding, while its golden superstructure and the modern Kashi Vishwanath Dham belong to later phases. The shrine is a focal point of Kashi’s Shiva pilgrimage and its traditions of liberation.

History

Kashi Vishwanath is one of Varanasi’s most prominent Shiva shrines. The temple has a complex history of destruction, rebuilding and continued pilgrimage. The current principal structure was rebuilt under Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar in 1780; gilding of domes is associated with Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Hindu tradition honours Kashi as Shiva’s city and a place of moksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Vishwanath means Lord of the Universe. Pilgrimage connects darshan of this Jyotirlinga with the sacred Ganga and the city’s wider network of shrines.

Founder, Patronage and Reconstruction

The present temple was rebuilt under Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in the late eighteenth century, commonly dated to 1780. Maharaja Ranjit Singh later sponsored the gilding of its spire and dome.

Religious and Cultural Significance

Vishvanatha is revered as Kashi’s presiding Shiva and as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The sacred identity of Kashi also connects the shrine with Ganga bathing and the religious hope of moksha.

Architecture / Physical Features

The temple’s gold-covered spire and dome give rise to the name Golden Temple. The older shrine and the modern Dham access development are distinct phases of the complex, rather than one building of a single date.

Sacred Geography and Natural Setting

The temple lies in the old city on the western side of the Ganga. The Dham development connects the shrine’s pilgrimage approach with the riverfront.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

The official portal lists five aarti services across the day: Mangala, Bhog, Saptarishi, Shringar/Bhog and Shayan. Attendance at a ticketed aarti and ordinary darshan are different services.

How to Reach

Varanasi has an airport, major rail connections and road services. Continue to the old-city temple approach by local transport; the final security-controlled approach differs from arriving at a railway station or airport.

Entry, Tickets and Booking

Use the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust portal for its aarti and Sugam Darshan services. Mangala Aarti has its own early entry window; purchasing a different service does not confer admission to that ritual.

Photography and Electronic Devices

The Trust’s current notices prohibit electronic gadgets, including mobile phones, inside the temple premises and garbhagriha. Locker capacity is limited, so a phone should not be treated as something that can simply be carried through security.

Address and Location Details

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham, Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh, India; old-city Ganga riverfront area.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties

The sacred antiquity of Vishveshvara is distinct from the date of the present Ahilyabai-era building and the later Dham development. The five aarti windows are service times, not a promise of continuous access to the sanctum.
