About this temple

Rudraprayag is the meeting of the Mandakini and Alaknanda and the fourth Panch Prayag when following the river downstream. The town is also the junction of the routes towards the Kedarnath and Badrinath valleys. Its sangam, Narad Shila and Shiva worship give this stop a distinct identity within the circuit.

History

The sacred settlement predates the modern administrative district. Rudraprayag district was created on 16 September 1997 from parts of neighbouring districts; that date is not the foundation date of the sangam or its temples.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Narada is believed to have performed penance here to master music. Shiva appeared as Rudra and blessed him. Narad Shila, above the riverbank, is traditionally identified with the sage’s meditation.

Architecture / Physical Features

A flight of steps descends to the riverbank. The state tourism description identifies a cremation ghat, Narad Shila and a Shiva temple around the sangam precinct.

Sacred Geography and Natural Setting

The Mandakini descends from the Kedarnath region and joins the Alaknanda here. The united river remains Alaknanda until meeting the Bhagirathi at Devprayag.

How to Reach

The town is reached by road from Srinagar and Rishikesh. The branching Kedarnath and Badrinath routes make it a staging point, but distances to the valleys should not be mistaken for door-to-door road access to Kedarnath temple.

Nearby Religious Places

The district names Shiva and Jagdamba temples in Rudraprayag. Koteshwar Mahadev, about three kilometres from the centre in the state description, is a separate cave shrine associated with Shiva’s meditation.

Accessibility and Senior Visitor Guidance

Reaching town by vehicle and descending the ghat are separate activities. The river approach involves stairs; visitors unable to manage them should choose an appropriate upper viewpoint.

Address and Location Details

Rudraprayag Sangam, Rudraprayag town and district, Uttarakhand, India.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The district gives Augustmuni as about 18 kilometres from Rudraprayag, while the state tourism page gives around 10 kilometres. That discrepancy concerns a separate nearby destination and is not used here as a fixed route distance. Mandakini meets Alaknanda here, not Bhagirathi; Bhagirathi’s confluence is at Devprayag.
