About this temple

Baglamukhi Temple at Bankhandi is the yellow-coloured Goddess shrine on the Kangra–Hoshiarpur road. Worship centres on Baglamukhi, one of the ten Mahavidyas, and the precinct has substantial enclosures for havan. Yellow dress and yellow offerings are characteristic of its pilgrimage practice. This record refers to Bankhandi in Kangra, not the similarly named shrines at Nalkheda, Datia or Patan.

History

The Bankhandi shrine is an established centre of Mahavidya worship described by Himachal Tourism and the Kangra government temple portal. Those sources identify its present location and religious practices but do not establish a corroborated foundation year or a securely dated founding patron. The age of the Goddess tradition is therefore not used as a construction date for the current building.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Baglamukhi, also called Pitambara, is revered for stilling hostile forces and overcoming deception. Devotees seek protection and the resolution of conflict through her worship. These are religious beliefs; claims that a ritual guarantees victory in litigation or protection from illness are not presented as demonstrated outcomes.

Religious and Cultural Significance

Baglamukhi is one of the ten Mahavidyas. The yellow or pitambara association is central to the shrine’s public devotional identity.

Architecture / Physical Features

Himachal Tourism describes a yellow-painted complex with a Goddess image and large enclosures used for havan.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

Havan is a prominent practice. State tourism describes devotees wearing yellow and offering yellow besan laddoos.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Himachal Tourism identifies Navratri as a major visiting period, with community feasts forming part of the nine-day celebrations.

How to Reach

The state tourism description locates Bankhandi on the Kangra–Hoshiarpur road, about 26 km from Kangra. Continue by local road transport to the temple.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The Kangra portal’s description mentions an entrance to Kotla Fort alongside Bankhandi, while Himachal Tourism specifically places the yellow temple at Bankhandi on the Kangra–Hoshiarpur road. These location statements should not be assumed to identify one entrance without further evidence. This record follows the Bankhandi identity. Broad use of “Shakti Peetha” for a Mahavidya shrine also does not settle its inclusion in every numbered Sati-peetha list.
