About this temple

Chandi Devi crowns Neel Parvat above the Ganga at Haridwar. The hill shrine is part of Haridwar’s Panch Tirth and Siddh Peeth pilgrimage landscape. Pilgrims reach it by a roughly three-kilometre walking approach from the Chandighat side or by ropeway. The twentieth-century temple building and the older tradition concerning its main image are described separately.

History

The Ministry of Tourism dates the temple building to 1929 under King Suchat Singh of Kashmir. It separately reports the tradition that Adi Shankaracharya established the principal image in the eighth century. These statements concern different elements of the shrine: the present building and the sacred image’s religious history.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The Chandika narrative tells of Shumbh and Nishumbh seizing the gods’ kingdom and demanding the Goddess’s submission. Their commanders Chanda and Munda are defeated by a fierce manifestation arising from the Goddess, followed by the defeat of the demon kings. The local tradition connects the confrontation with Neel Parvat.

Religious and Cultural Significance

Uttarakhand Tourism includes Neel Parvat among Haridwar’s five principal pilgrimage places. Chandi Devi, Mansa Devi on Bilwa Parvat and Maya Devi form the city’s Siddh Peeth triangle.

Architecture / Physical Features

The temple occupies the summit precinct on Neel Parvat. Its building date is distinct from the traditionally earlier installation of the main image.

Sacred Geography and Natural Setting

The shrine is on the Neel Parvat side of Haridwar’s Ganga landscape, separate from the Bilwa Parvat location of Mansa Devi.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Chaitra and Ashvin Navratri are major pilgrimage periods. October–March is the cooler visiting season recommended by the national tourism portal.

How to Reach

Haridwar is the rail and road gateway. From the Chandighat side, take the hill walking route or the separately ticketed Udan Khatola ropeway.

Nearby Religious Places

Mansa Devi, Maya Devi, Har Ki Pauri and the Kankhal sacred area belong to the wider Haridwar pilgrimage circuit.

Accessibility and Senior Visitor Guidance

The ropeway avoids much of the uphill trek, but it does not establish that every section of the summit precinct is step-free. Choose the approach with the visitor’s mobility needs in mind.

Address and Location Details

Chandi Devi Temple, Neel Parvat, Haridwar district, Uttarakhand, India.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The eighth-century image-installation tradition and the documented tourism account of the 1929 building can appear to give contradictory ages. They describe different claims and should not be merged into a single construction year. Some sources call the site a Siddh Peeth and others a Shakti shrine; those terms do not by themselves establish identical membership in every 51-, 52- or 108-seat list.
