About this temple
Thiruvenkadu is the Budha-associated Navagraha temple near Poompuhar. Its sacred identity extends beyond Mercury worship: Swetharanyeswarar, Aghoramurti and Nataraja represent three aspects of Shiva, while the Agni, Surya and Chandra tanks shape the pilgrimage precinct. Brahmavidyambigai is the principal Goddess.
History
The temple is praised in Tevaram hymns. The epigraphic study Later Chola Temples describes early Chola evidence and subsequent gifts; Shaivam’s temple account records Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagara inscriptions concerning lamps, images, land and festivals. These layers of patronage do not give a single foundation date for the whole surviving complex.
Legends & Religious Traditions
Aghoramurti, Maruttuvan and Nandi
The principal sthala-purana concerns Maruttuvan, who misused a powerful trident and attacked Nandi. Shiva manifested as the fierce Aghoramurti to protect his devotees. Shaivam’s account says the demon was destroyed and associates Nandi’s nine openings with the wounds. Some later retellings instead end in the demon’s surrender.
Brahmavidyambigai and sacred knowledge
The Goddess is said to have taught Brahma, explaining her name as the giver of divine knowledge. Another account describes her birth as Matanga’s daughter and marriage to Shiva at Thiruvenkadu.
Indra’s expiation
Shaivam recounts Indra worshipping here after the killing of Vritra. The annual celebration is called Indra Mahotsavam and is traditionally understood as conducted by Indra himself. These are devotional narratives accompanying the temple’s worship, not independently verified historical events.
Religious and Cultural Significance
The Budha shrine is within a major Shiva temple praised in Tamil sacred poetry. Budha’s association with learning and speech is an astrological religious tradition.
Architecture / Physical Features
The large precinct contains separate Shiva manifestations and the Goddess’s shrine. Three sacred tanks—Agni, Surya and Chandra—are a defining feature; they are not three names for a single tank.
Sculpture, Inscriptions and Artistic Heritage
Aghoramurti and Nataraja are distinctive sculptural forms. The recorded royal and private endowments concern worship, sacred images, lamps, gardens and temple services.
Festivals and Religious Significance
Indra Mahotsavam belongs to the temple’s local festival tradition. Aghoramurti worship has its own special observances; dates and access need to be checked against the temple’s annual programme.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations
Maruttuvan’s destruction and surrender are alternative endings in different devotional retellings. Published visitor hours also differ. Older Nagapattinam district references predate the creation of Mayiladuthurai district and are not used for the current address.
