About this temple
Vaitheeswaran Koil is the Angaraka-associated Navagraha shrine between Mayiladuthurai and Sirkazhi. Its principal deity is Shiva as the divine physician, Vaidyanathar, with Thaiyalnayaki and Muthukumaraswami. The Siddhamirtham tank and traditions of healing prayers distinguish this large living temple.
History
The district administration identifies its Tevaram name as Pullirukkuvellur. Incredible India notes the seventh-century Saiva hymnic tradition and Chola inscriptions recording gifts and construction. Those records establish layers of worship and patronage rather than one proven foundation date for every building.
Legends & Religious Traditions
Angaraka and the divine physician
A principal narrative says that Angaraka suffered from leprosy and sought Shiva’s help. Shiva appeared as Vaidyanathar, the physician, and granted relief. This explains Mars worship alongside Shiva’s healing identity.
Jatayu and the Ramayana landscape
The municipal pilgrimage account associates Jatayu Kundam with Rama’s funeral rites for Jatayu, the bird who opposed Ravana during Sita’s abduction. The tank and shrine therefore participate in a Ramayana sacred geography as well as Navagraha worship.
Siddhamirtham and sacred offerings
Devotees regard the temple tank and the ash-and-soil prasadam called Thiruchandu Urundai as sacred. These are beliefs and ritual practices, not evidence that the water or prasadam cures disease.
Religious and Cultural Significance
The circuit associates this shrine with Angaraka, or Sevvai/Mars. Vaidyanathar remains the principal Shiva deity; this is not the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga at Deoghar.
Architecture / Physical Features
The complex has a five-tiered gateway and spacious precincts around the main lingam and tank. Thaiyalnayaki, Muruga as Muthukumaraswami and the separate Mars shrine have their own worship spaces.
Rituals, Worship and Seva
Healing prayers include symbolic metal body-part offerings and sacred ash prasadam. Tonsure, rice-flour lamps and salt-and-pepper offerings are described by tourism sources. Participation is a matter of faith, with no promised medical outcome.
How to Reach
The district guide places the temple about 12 km from Mayiladuthurai and 5 km from Sirkazhi. Use those towns and Vaitheeswarankoil’s local transport connections, rather than assuming Thanjavur is the closest approach merely because a tourism page groups it under Thanjavur.
Nearby Religious Places
Sirkazhi’s Sattainathar complex and Thiruvenkadu Swetharanyeswarar are separate pilgrimage stops in the same district.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations
Older descriptions place the temple in Nagapattinam, while current district administration identifies it within Mayiladuthurai. Incredible India’s URL groups it under Thanjavur; that is not used as its district. Healing claims and Nadi predictions are religious or divinatory traditions, not scientifically verified diagnoses or guarantees. The evening timing label is ambiguous and is disclosed.
