LENYADRI, PUNE, MAHARASHTRA

Girijatmajगिरिजात्मज

Girijatmaj at Lenyadri is the Ashtavinayak shrine within Cave 7 of a rock-cut Buddhist cave group near Junnar. The mountain approach, large excavated hall and cave setting make this pilgrimage physically different from the road-level Ashtavinayak temples.

About this temple

Girijatmaj at Lenyadri is the Ashtavinayak shrine within Cave 7 of a rock-cut Buddhist cave group near Junnar. The mountain approach, large excavated hall and cave setting make this pilgrimage physically different from the road-level Ashtavinayak temples.

History

The cave complex originated as a Buddhist monastic site in the early centuries CE. The later Ganesha shrine occupies part of that excavated architecture. The date of the cave excavation is not automatically the date when Hindu worship began here.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The Trust describes Parvati’s twelve-year penance for a son and Ganesha’s manifestation as Girijatmaj, “son of Girija”. It also records a Pandava story in which the caves were made in one night. This is sacred legend, distinct from archaeological interpretation.

Architecture / Physical Features

Cave 7 has a broad central hall, cells around its sides and a pillared verandah. The Ganesha shrine uses rear cells adapted within the earlier vihara.

Pilgrim Facilities and Accommodation

The Trust describes Yatri Niwas facilities and a noon–2:00 PM lunch service. Enquire for the current contribution and room availability rather than relying on older published prices.

Accessibility and Senior Visitor Guidance

A substantial staircase climbs the hillside. Published counts differ, but all describe a stepped ascent; the cave is not a drive-to-door shrine.

Address and Location Details

Shri Girijatmaj Ganpati, Lenyadri near Golegaon and Junnar, Pune district, Maharashtra, India.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The Trust’s one-night Pandava story and the Buddhist cave chronology describe different kinds of account. The Trust speaks of twenty-eight caves, while heritage descriptions count broader groups of thirty or more. Stair counts also vary between 283 and 307. These counts should be attributed, not presented as one uncontested measurement.
