About this temple
Koneshwar Mahadev is the Chowk Shiva shrine distinguished by a shivalinga placed towards a corner rather than the centre. Its name is explained through both the corner-position tradition and its association with the sage Kaundinya. It is a separate temple from Kotwaleshwar at Chowk Kotwali.
History
The shrine preserves a local tradition of worship on the former Gomti-side landscape. A renewed temple complex was announced for inauguration on 27 February 2020 after several years of work. Further pilgrim-amenity funding was reported in 2026; an announced project is not proof that every proposed facility is already operational.
Legends & Religious Traditions
One account credits Kaundinya with installing the linga near his ashram on the Gomti. Another connects Lakshmana’s visit, while distressed after leaving Sita, with worship under the sage’s guidance. The distinctive corner story says that attempts to move the linga to the centre failed: it returned to its earlier position on successive nights. Worshippers therefore accepted its chosen place. These are local devotional accounts, not independently verified movements of an object.
Architecture / Physical Features
The offset shivalinga is the feature to notice within the renewed complex. Additional deities are worshipped in the precinct. The visible modern works should not be used to assign the same age to the linga tradition or every part of the temple.
Rituals, Worship and Seva
Jalabhisheka to Shiva is central to devotion here. Follow the current priest-directed arrangement for water offerings and queue movement, especially on Mondays when the sanctum attracts more visitors.
Festivals and Religious Significance
Shravan and its Mondays bring particularly heavy attendance. Mahashivratri is another principal Shiva observance; confirm the temple’s announced aarti and special abhisheka arrangements.
How to Reach
Use local transport to Koneshwar Chauraha/Chowk, specifying Koneshwar Mahadev. Old-city traffic and festival diversions may require the last part of the approach on foot.
Suggested Visit Duration
Allow 30–60 minutes outside Monday and Shravan queues. This is a planning estimate.
Pilgrim Facilities and Accommodation
A charitable dispensary and improved rooms were reported in connection with the 2020 redevelopment. Later reports propose lighting, drinking water, toilets and rest areas. Confirm what is available on the day before relying on a particular amenity.
Contradictory Accounts and Variations
One etymology derives Koneshwar from the corner position; another from Kaundinyashwar, named for Kaundinya. Accounts variously credit the sage or Lakshmana with installation or worship. Epic associations and approximate claims of a 400-year-old shrine are not presented as one agreed construction date.
