EAST FORT, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, KERALA

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Templeश्री पद्मनाभस्वामी मंदिर

At East Fort, Vishnu is worshipped reclining on Anantha. The shrine is a Divya Desam and the spiritual centre of the former Travancore kingdom.

About this temple

At East Fort, Vishnu is worshipped reclining on Anantha. The shrine is a Divya Desam and the spiritual centre of the former Travancore kingdom.

History

Marthanda Varma undertook major rebuilding and in 1750 dedicated Travancore to Padmanabha through Thrippadidanam. The rulers thereafter styled themselves Padmanabha Dasa, servants of the deity. The temple’s own website states that the original consecration cannot be dated precisely from reliable historical evidence.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The Vilwamangalam narrative follows a divine child who leaves the sage after being rebuked and directs him to Ananthankat. There a great tree becomes the vast reclining Vishnu. The story connects this shrine with Ananthapura in Kasaragod; it is a sacred explanation of manifestation, not a documented journey or building chronology.

Architecture / Physical Features

A sculpted entrance tower, long stone corridors and Kerala roof forms combine Dravidian and regional design. Padma Theertham is the adjoining temple tank. The credited photograph is a north-side exterior view.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Murajapam, the extended recitation of Vedic prayers, is conducted in a six-year cycle. The regular festival calendar and special darshan arrangements should be checked separately.

How to Reach

East Fort is reached from central Thiruvananthapuram by local transport. The temple and Padma Theertham form the final pedestrian setting.

Entry, Tickets and Booking

Darshan occurs in defined sessions interrupted by rituals. Consult the official Timing page and current dress and entry instructions before travelling; a single all-day opening interval would be misleading.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

Royal reconstruction in the eighteenth century is documented separately from the ancient manifestation tradition. Treasure-vault speculation is not presented as verified sacred history.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties

No exact original foundation date or current special-darshan tariff has been inferred from older travel accounts.
