Sabarimala Dharma Sastha Templeसबरीमला धर्मशास्ता मंदिर

Sabarimala’s hilltop Sannidhanam is the shrine of Ayyappa as Dharma Sastha. The pilgrimage is defined by preparatory discipline, the Pampa approach and the sacred eighteen steps.

About this temple

Sabarimala’s hilltop Sannidhanam is the shrine of Ayyappa as Dharma Sastha. The pilgrimage is defined by preparatory discipline, the Pampa approach and the sacred eighteen steps.

History

The present Sabarimala institution was rebuilt after the destructive 1950 fire. Kerala Tourism records installation of the panchaloha Dharma Sastha image on 4 June 1951 by Kandararu Shankararu of Thazhamon Madom. This modern reconsecration is separate from the Pandalam and Manikantan sacred narratives.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The Pandalam king Rajasekhara finds a child wearing a neck ornament and raises him as Manikantan. A palace plot sends him to obtain tigress’s milk. The divine child defeats Mahishi, whose boon permits death only at the hands of the son of Shiva and Vishnu in Mohini form. He returns accompanied by tigers, revealing his identity, and withdraws to Sabarimala. The story explains both the Pandalam relationship and Ayyappa’s ascetic form.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

Pilgrims traditionally undertake a 41-day vrata and carry an irumudi. The eighteen steps have their own ritual conditions; a general temple visit and the right to ascend those steps are not identical arrangements.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Mandala worship and Makaravilakku form the main pilgrimage season. Monthly and other special openings follow an announced calendar; the sanctum is not continuously open throughout the year.

How to Reach

Travel through the officially designated Nilakkal–Pampa arrangements and continue on foot towards Sannidhanam. Traffic controls and permitted routes change with the pilgrimage season.

Nearby Religious Places

Pandalam Valiya Koyikkal is linked with the royal tradition; Malikappuram is within the Sabarimala sacred complex.

Entry, Tickets and Booking

Use the official pilgrimage portal for the current virtual-queue requirements and opening dates. This profile does not substitute an outdated legal or age-eligibility statement for the current official guidance.

Seasonal Access and Visitor Safety

The uphill route, crowds and forest setting require realistic planning for mobility and health. Follow current district, police and Devaswom instructions rather than old route videos.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

Manikantan’s childhood and Mahishi episode are devotional narrative. They should not be used to assign a historical construction year to the present sanctuary.
