About this temple

The Visalakshi–Viswanathaswamy shrine anchors Kalpathy’s agraharam streets and famous Ratholsavam. Its riverbank setting and chariot routes are integral to the visit.

History

The district tourism council dates the temple to the fifteenth century; a Kerala Tourism festival booklet gives approximately 1425. Broader publicity sometimes calls the tradition over 700 years old, so the building date should not be stated as exact.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Lakshmi Ammal, a Brahmin widow, is said to have brought a Shiva linga from Kashi and installed it here. The name Viswanatha and the riverbank setting express the local connection with Kashi, rather than suggesting the two cities are geographically linked.

Architecture / Physical Features

Eighteen steps descend from the eastern gopuram to the temple. Banyan trees, serpent consecrations and the adjoining agraharam streets are notable features of the precinct.

Festivals and Religious Significance

The ten-day Ratholsavam takes place in November. Decorated chariots are drawn through village streets, especially during the final three days, alongside Vedic recitation and cultural programmes.

How to Reach

Reach Kalpathy within Palakkad by local road transport. During the chariot festival, approach restrictions and crowding affect the narrow residential streets.

Accessibility and Senior Visitor Guidance

The descending entrance steps matter for visitors with limited mobility. Ask about a suitable approach before arrival; the heritage description does not establish a continuous step-free route.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

Fifteenth-century construction and general claims of greater antiquity are both recorded with their differing precision. Lakshmi Ammal’s Kashi journey is the traditional foundation account.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties

This entry concerns the New Kalpathy Viswanatha shrine, not every temple participating in the wider village festival.
