About this temple
Dwarkadhish, or Jagat Mandir, is the principal Krishna temple at Dwarka beside Gomti creek near the Arabian Sea. It is the western shrine of the all-India Char Dham and represents Dwarka in the Sapta Puri pilgrimage. The sculptured stone tower, ceremonial flag and river-facing steps are defining features of the complex.
History
Tradition credits Vajranabh, Krishna’s great-grandson, with establishing the shrine. Gujarat Tourism describes repeated rebuilding, including destruction in 1472 and reconstruction in the fifteenth–sixteenth centuries, with further later work. The legendary origin of worship and the age of the surviving fabric are separate questions.
Legends & Religious Traditions
Krishna is believed to have established his kingdom at Dwarka after leaving Braj. Gujarat Tourism also recounts successive submergences of the sacred city. These are religious narratives; underwater remains and particular standing temple structures cannot be dated simply by accepting a legendary chronology.
Architecture / Physical Features
The district describes a five-storeyed shrine with a sanctum, vestibule and rectangular pillared hall. Carved walls carry mythological subjects. The entrances are known as Swarg Dwar and Moksh Dwar.
Sculpture, Inscriptions and Artistic Heritage
The sculptured shikhar rises above the clustered roofs. The district and state tourism descriptions give its height as approximately 43 metres and describe the large flag as made from 52 yards of cloth.
Sacred Geography and Natural Setting
The temple occupies the meeting landscape of Gomti creek and the sea. A flight of fifty-plus steps connects the river side with the precinct; visitors using this approach should expect stairs.
Festivals and Religious Significance
Janmashtami is a principal celebration of Krishna’s birth. Gujarat Tourism identifies it as a major occasion for pilgrimage here.
Best Time to Visit
Gujarat Tourism recommends November–February for the cooler coastal season. Janmashtami draws a substantially different, festival-focused visit.
Nearby Religious Places
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga and the separate Rukmini Devi Temple are important destinations in the Dwarka region. They should not be treated as rooms within Jagat Mandir.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations
Government pages give differing ages: the district temple page mentions about 1,200 years, its places-of-interest page calls the architecture 2,200 years old, and state tourism describes an origin more than 2,500 years ago. These claims are not a single settled date. The Vajranabh foundation tradition and subsequent rebuilding must be presented separately.
