About this temple
Padmavathi Ammavari Temple is the goddess’s principal shrine at Tiruchanur, near Tirupati. Its sacred tank, Padma Sarovaram, is central to the golden-lotus manifestation narrative and the Panchami Theertham festival. The temple is a separate destination from Tirumala’s Venkateswara shrine. Its lotus-born identity is reflected in the name Alarmelmangapuram, the town of the goddess upon the lotus.
History
The temple’s institution preserves a foundation attribution to Tondaman, while its sacred origin is told through several Puranic narratives. Such an attribution is not a date for every surviving building. The site’s documented living identity is maintained by TTD through its worship, processions and Kartheeka Brahmotsavam. A construction year is not invented from the lotus-manifestation story.
Legends & Religious Traditions
Akasa Raja’s lotus-born daughter
One tradition says Akasa Raja found a girl in a lotus while preparing a sacrificial field. He raised her as Padmavathi, and her marriage to Srinivasa became the celestial wedding story.
Padma Sarovaram’s manifestation
A second account concerns Mahalakshmi’s emergence on a golden lotus in the tank. TTD’s published book describes Srinivasa seeking her after separation, being directed to Suka’s sacred setting and performing twelve years of penance. She appears on Kartika Shukla Panchami and remains as the worshipped goddess at Tiruchanur.
Different versions of the penance
The short temple webpage instead places the twelve-year penance with the goddess. These are differing received versions. The royal daughter narrative and the tank-manifestation narrative should not be silently treated as the same episode.
Madhava’s redemption
The institutional legend also traces Akasa Raja’s prior birth to Madhava, who strayed from his religious duties and was restored through pilgrimage and worship at Tirumala. This is part of the sacred account connecting the royal family with Srinivasa, rather than a verifiable genealogy.
Sacred Geography and Natural Setting
Padma Sarovaram is integral to the temple’s identity. The lotus-manifestation tradition explains its sanctity and the name Alamelu Manga. The tank ritual is a distinct setting from normal darshan inside the goddess’s sanctuary.
Rituals, Worship and Seva
TTD lists daily Kalyanotsavam for Bhoga Srinivasa and Padmavathi’s processional images, Monday Ashtadala Pada Padmaradhana, Thursday Tiruppavada, Friday Abhishekam and Saturday Pushpanjali. Participation depends on the particular seva’s arrangements, not general temple entry.
Festivals and Religious Significance
Kartheeka Brahmotsavam culminates in Panchami Theertham, commemorating the goddess’s manifestation. Sudarshana Chakrattalwar receives the sacred tank bath in the festival sequence. Navaratri, Vasantotsavam and float festival are also listed by TTD. Annual dates must follow that year’s notice.
How to Reach
Tiruchanur is approximately five kilometres from Tirupati in the institutional description. Travel by local road transport from Tirupati city; it is not on the summit of Tirumala. Plan any separate hill darshan with its own travel and reporting time.
Dress Code and Temple Etiquette
TTD’s seva instructions require traditional dress and state that cellphones and electronic items are not allowed. Observe the specific reporting and storage arrangements for the seva attended.
Contradictory Accounts and Variations
TTD material preserves multiple accounts: Padmavathi as Akasa Raja’s daughter, Mahalakshmi’s emergence from Padma Sarovaram, and differing descriptions of who performed the twelve-year penance. These variations are explained rather than forced into a single narrative. The devotional recommendation to visit the goddess and the actual sequence chosen by pilgrims are not a universal admission rule.
