About this temple

Ekambareswarar at Kanchipuram represents earth in the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams. The expansive Shiva temple is distinguished by its tall entrance tower and sacred mango-tree tradition. It is a separate complex from Kamakshi Amman Temple, although both belong to the same temple city.

History

HRCE describes an ancient Pallava-period sacred site and inscriptions that raise the possibility of an earlier brick shrine. The surviving complex grew through later patronage. The district attributes the approximately 57-metre Rajagopuram to Vijayanagara ruler Krishnadevaraya.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The sacred mango tree gives the shrine its Eka-amra association, the “single mango”. HRCE recounts Shiva’s marriage to Elavarkuzhali beneath the tree and identifies the place with Sundarar’s recovery of sight in one eye. These belong to the temple’s devotional tradition.

Religious and Cultural Significance

The temple is a Tevaram-praised Shiva shrine. HRCE records hymns by Sambandar, Appar, Sundarar and Manikkavacakar, linking the living temple with Tamil Shaiva literature.

Architecture / Physical Features

The large gopuram dominates the complex. The mango tree is a sacred focus within the precinct, distinct from the main lingam and entrance tower.

Sacred Geography and Natural Setting

HRCE names Sivaganga and the sacred Kampa-river tradition within the temple landscape, with Sarva Tirtham and Mangala Tirtham outside. A hidden Kampa flow is described as belief, not a mapped public watercourse.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

HRCE lists successive morning services, midday worship, evening Sayarakshai and Ardhajama. The ritual table extends later than some stated visitor closing hours; attendance at a specific service needs confirmation.

Nearby Religious Places

Kamakshi Amman and Kailasanathar are other Kanchipuram shrines. They should have separate temple records and photographs.

Address and Location Details

Arulmigu Ekambaranathar Temple, Kanchipuram, Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu 631502, India.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

HRCE publishes differing evening closes of 8:00 and 8:30 PM, a midday close described as 12:30 PM in one place and 1:00 PM in another, and ritual slots extending beyond those hours. The visitor schedule is therefore not presented as a single guaranteed uninterrupted period. Early worship, later rebuilding and the Vijayanagara tower are also different historical phases.
