TULSIPUR, BALRAMPUR, UTTAR PRADESH

Devi Patan Temple, Tulsipurदेवी पाटन मंदिर, तुलसीपुर

Devi Patan at Tulsipur is devoted to Maa Pateshwari and has close associations with the Nath tradition and Gorakhnath. It is a cross-border pilgrimage focus for devotees from India and Nepal.

About this temple

Devi Patan at Tulsipur is devoted to Maa Pateshwari and has close associations with the Nath tradition and Gorakhnath. It is a cross-border pilgrimage focus for devotees from India and Nepal.

History

Devi Patan is a living Shakta and Nath pilgrimage centre. Its own history page cites nineteenth-century gazetteers and attributes early temple building to Gorakhnath. Those references do not establish a single construction date for the surviving complex.

Legends & Religious Traditions

Shakti Peetha tradition: Following Sati’s death at Daksha’s sacrifice, Shiva carried her body until Vishnu’s discus divided it, creating sacred places where the parts fell. The district identifies the right shoulder here; the temple account identifies the left shoulder with her garment.

Pataleshwari tradition: The temple associates the site with Sita’s return into the earth. Offerings at the Patal Chabutra preserve this devotional association.

Parashurama and Karna tradition: Karna is said to have studied under Parashurama here and worshipped Surya after bathing in Surya Kund.

Protective-bees tradition: The temple recounts that bees emerged when an attacker named Mir Samar probed the sacred opening, driving off the attackers. This is an attributed miracle story, not independently verified military history.

Sacred Geography and Natural Setting

Surya Kund is a sacred pond within the temple setting. Local belief associates its creation with Karna in honour of his father, the Sun God.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

The district describes devotees bathing in Surya Kund before worshipping Maa Pateshwari. Navratri pilgrimage and mundan offerings are separately recorded for the shrine.

Festivals and Religious Significance

Navratri brings large gatherings and mundan offerings. The district describes a Chaitra Panchami procession bringing Pir Ratan Nath's deity from Dang in Nepal.

How to Reach

The shrine is about 1.6 km northwest of Tulsipur railway station according to the district. Road approaches to Balrampur from Lucknow run through Barabanki and either Gonda or Bahraich, followed by the Tulsipur route.

Pilgrim Facilities and Accommodation

The temple website lists yatri accommodation, a mundan area and rest shelter, and a yajna hall. Confirm present availability and booking arrangements directly.

Address and Location Details

Shri Maa Pateshwari Shaktipeeth, Devi Patan, Tulsipur, Balrampur district, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

Sati’s body-part attribution differs: Balrampur district specifies the right shoulder, while the temple website specifies the left shoulder with the garment. Both are religious traditions. Published Shakti Peetha lists also differ; the district includes Devi Patan among the 51.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties

Reviewed 29 October 2026. The temple’s Sati, Sita, Karna and protective-bees narratives are attributed religious accounts. No uniform construction date or independent confirmation of the miracle narrative was established. Existing district-sourced timings and two photographs are preserved. The district page’s mixed-location photo carousel includes other attractions; those must not be used as Devi Patan photographs.
