Dakshineswar Kali Templeदक्षिणेश्वर काली मंदिर

Dakshineswar is the Bhavatarini Kali shrine on the eastern bank of the Hooghly, north of central Kolkata. Its association with Sri Ramakrishna makes it significant in the religious history of nineteenth-century Bengal.

About this temple

Dakshineswar is the Bhavatarini Kali shrine on the eastern bank of the Hooghly, north of central Kolkata. Its association with Sri Ramakrishna makes it significant in the religious history of nineteenth-century Bengal.

History

Rani Rashmoni established the temple in 1855. The district administration records her patronage and the shrine’s close association with Ramakrishna.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The foundation tradition tells that Rani Rashmoni prepared to travel to Kashi to worship the Divine Mother. Before departing, she dreamed that the Goddess asked her to establish an image and arrange worship beside the Ganges instead. The story explains her choice to build at Dakshineswar. It is a devotional foundation account, distinct from the documented nineteenth-century patronage and building chronology.

Architecture / Physical Features

The main shrine follows Bengal’s Navaratna form, with nine spires. Twelve Shiva shrines line the riverfront; a Radha-Krishna temple forms part of the larger complex.

Sacred Geography and Natural Setting

The temple precinct faces the Hooghly River. The riverfront shrines and bathing ghat are part of its sacred setting.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

Morning aarti is reported around 5:30 AM and evening Sandhya aarti around 6:30–7:00 PM. These approximate ritual times were supplied for editorial review and have not been independently confirmed against a current temple-issued schedule. A ritual time should not be assumed to be the general visitor opening time.

Nearby Religious Places

Adyapith, the shrine of Adya Ma founded under Annada Thakur’s inspiration, is another pilgrimage destination near Dakshineswar.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

Reports differ on afternoon reopening: the cited YatraDham guide gives 3:00 PM in winter and 3:30 PM in April–September, whereas the supplied summary gives 3:30 PM generally. Evening closing varies by season and festivals. Aarti estimates are provisional.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties

Seasonal hours checked against the supplied YatraDham page on 30 October 2026; they are third-party visitor guidance, not a guarantee from temple management. Licensed photograph by Ravi Dwivedi retained. The temple lies in North 24 Parganas district.
