About this temple

Chintamani at Theur is the Ashtavinayak temple near Pune associated with freedom from mental agitation and the Chintamani jewel. Its wooden assembly hall and connection with Madhavrao Peshwa are important features of the living temple.

History

Incredible India attributes the wooden sabha-mandapa to Madhavrao Peshwa in the eighteenth century and associates Theur with his final days. Temple traditions are older than that hall, and the date of one patron’s work is not the origin date of every part of the complex.

Legends & Religious Traditions

The Trust preserves three stories: Brahma gaining steadiness of mind; Ganesha recovering Kapila’s Chintamani jewel from Gana; and Indra obtaining release after Gautama’s curse. In the jewel story Kapila declines to reclaim it, and Ganesha remains as Chintamani.

Religious and Cultural Significance

The Trust links the place with steadiness and peace of mind. That devotional meaning is not a medical claim or promise of treatment.

Architecture / Physical Features

The wooden sabha-mandapa is a notable Peshwa-period addition. The deity’s jeweled eyes and the traditional east-facing image are described in tourism material.

How to Reach

Theur is in Haveli taluka of Pune district and is reached by road from Pune. It is a separate locality from Morgaon and Ranjangaon.

Address and Location Details

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The three origin stories coexist in the Trust’s account; this profile does not select one as the only story. The Trust’s ritual timetable starts earlier and ends later than national tourism’s general visitor hours. A final puja time is not itself a public admission guarantee.
