AMBALAPPUZHA, SOUTH OF ALAPPUZHA, ALAPPUZHA, KERALA

Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Templeअंबलप्पुझा श्री कृष्ण मंदिर

Ambalappuzha is the Krishna shrine of the former Chembakassery kingdom, especially associated with its milk-and-rice palpayasam and the performing-art traditions of Kunchan Nambiar.

About this temple

Ambalappuzha is the Krishna shrine of the former Chembakassery kingdom, especially associated with its milk-and-rice palpayasam and the performing-art traditions of Kunchan Nambiar.

History

Royal patronage shaped this temple in the early modern period. Its cultural history includes Kunchan Nambiar and Ottamthullal; the percussion instrument associated with him is preserved in the precinct. The temple and its pond form a single historic setting.

Legends & Religious Traditions

In the best-known payasam story, Krishna arrives disguised as a sage and challenges the king to chess. His prize is rice: one grain on the first square, doubled on every succeeding square. The king accepts, then discovers that his granaries cannot meet the exponentially growing debt. Krishna allows repayment through daily milk-rice offerings. Devotees also believe Guruvayurappan comes to partake of the payasam.

Architecture / Physical Features

The low, tiled Kerala temple buildings, courtyards and adjoining tank contrast with the tall sculpted towers of many Tamil shrines. The credited photograph shows the tank-side setting.

Rituals, Worship and Seva

Palpayasam is the defining nivedyam. Enquire at the temple counter about that day’s distribution; the chess story does not guarantee an unlimited free serving to every visitor.

How to Reach

Ambalappuzha is reached by road south of Alappuzha and has its own railway station. Continue locally to the temple rather than using Alappuzha town as the final destination.

Contradictory Accounts and Variations

The divine chess game is devotional tradition. Another account links the payasam to a king’s debt involving a local Brahmin and grain. These explanations coexist and should not be merged into one documented financial event.

Verification Notes and Uncertainties

A complete current puja timetable and payasam price were not established in the cited accounts; no fixed tariff is asserted.
