TOUR OF TEMPLES
About TourOfTemples
About TourOfTemples
India’s sacred geography is more than a collection of monuments. It is a living record of devotion, craftsmanship, philosophy, festivals, journeys and communities across generations.
Our Purpose
TourOfTemples is being developed as a welcoming guide to temples and sacred heritage across India. We aim to connect the places people wish to visit with the stories that give them meaning: where a temple stands, whom it honours, what its traditions teach, how its architecture developed and what visitors should know before travelling.
Our directory brings together temples, towns, districts, states and pilgrimage circuits. The objective is to help travellers, students, families, devotees and heritage enthusiasts discover places that might otherwise be difficult to locate or understand.
Why TourOfTemples?
Temple information is often fragmented. One source may provide a location, another an account of a festival, another a local legend, while important visitor details may only be available from temple authorities. Search results can also confuse similarly named temples in different districts.
TourOfTemples seeks to reduce that fragmentation through a structured India → State → District → City or Place → Temple directory, searchable maps, temple profiles and themed circuits. The aim is not to replace official authorities, historians or living traditions, but to make their publicly available information easier to discover and compare.
Many Traditions, Shared Heritage
The cultural landscape of India includes Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and other temple and sacred-site traditions. Their beliefs, practices and histories are distinct, and each deserves respectful and accurate presentation. Where historical evidence and religious narratives differ, we seek to identify those distinctions rather than present every account as an established historical fact.
Explore by Place or Pilgrimage
Visitors can start with a state or district, search for a specific temple, or follow a pilgrimage circuit. Our long-term goal is to provide useful profiles covering location, deity or tradition, historical background, festivals, timings, accessibility, visitor guidance, images and source references wherever reliably available.
Some profiles are still being researched. An incomplete record should not be mistaken for a complete account of a place.
Community Knowledge and Corrections
Local knowledge matters. Visitors and community members may suggest missing temples, share photographs they have the right to license, and report inaccurate or outdated details. Contributions enter a review process. A reported correction is an invitation to investigate, not automatic proof that the existing information is wrong.
Photographs and written contributions should be attributed appropriately. We do not intend to claim copyright ownership of works simply because they appear on another website.
Accuracy, Transparency and Responsibility
Information may be drawn from publicly accessible websites, official publications, reference works and community submissions. We endeavour to preserve source attribution and distinguish documented history from legends, traditions and disputed claims. Nevertheless, details can be incomplete, outdated or mistaken. Opening hours, routes, access restrictions and festival arrangements may change without notice.
Before travelling, please confirm critical information with the relevant temple management or official authority. If you identify an error, use the correction option on the temple page so it can be reviewed.
Help Build a Better Directory
TourOfTemples is an evolving project. Its value will grow through careful research, responsible photographs, local participation and corrections over time. We welcome contributions that help visitors discover sacred places respectfully and confidently.
